Lessons from counselling: applying key principles of counselling to our HBC-minded
work with clients
Saturday 8th July 2017
Price: £50 (LAA members receive small gift)
Where: The Dogs Trust, Manchester
The event is run by the Human Behaviour Change for Animal Welfare Community Resource
team -website here, but booking is available through LAA.
When working with animal owners, whether as a vet, behaviourist, trainer or in a
rescue or welfare setting, success in achieving compliance is dependent on our ability
to communicate effectively. Counselling skills can really make a difference in the
effectiveness of our communications and ultimately in the outcome of our involvement
and result for the benefit of the animal.
In this one day participative seminar we will first set the scene, exploring communication
with clients - the importance of effective communication and the barriers we face
to such communication during consultations. This will be followed by an introduction
to counselling skills and introducing the concepts of active listening, empathy,
unconditional positive regard, congruence and how to apply all those things in practice.
The afternoon will introduce Transactional Analysis - how to use this psychological
communication framework to help ourselves and our clients engage in healthy and effective
ways to implement change by understanding and applying the core concepts of this
model. We will also cover signposting for emotional support and how to broach this
issue with clients.
Led by Debbie Busby - biography coming soon.
The event is hosted by The Dogs Trust who support the aims of the HBCAW project.
The content of the day will be relevant to professionals working with any species.
